Business Read on TechCrunchEnlarge Cox Communications asked a court to block Rhode Island's plan for distributing $108.7 million in federal funding for broadband deployment. If successful, Cox's lawsuit could prevent other Internet service providers from obtaining grants to expand into areas that Cox says it already serves with high-speed broadband. The cable company claims Rhode Island used "flawed Internet speed data" to determine which areas are underserved and that the plan "will benefit wealthy parts of the State already served with high-speed Internet in contravention of the program that it purports to implement." Cox filed the lawsuit on Monday in Superior Court in Providence, Rhode Island. It seeks an injunction prohibiting Rhode Island from using the allegedly flawed speed test data to determine where broadband grants should be directed.

Business Read on GizmodoCalifornia is going after ExxonMobil over what it calls a “campaign of deception” about plastic recycling. The Golden State filed suit against the oil giant this week, alleging that it has misled consumers for years by marketing recycling as a way to prevent plastic pollution. Plastic is difficult and relatively costly to recycle, and very little of it ever gets rehashed, but the industry sold recycling as a feasible solution anyway. That’s why California wants to hold ExxonMobil accountable for the role it says the company played in filling landfills and waterways with plastic. Plastics are made with fossil fuels, and California says ExxonMobil is the biggest producer of single-use plastic polymers.

Business Read on WIRED BusinessI’m a big fan of noise-canceling earbuds in most situations, but when it comes to running, I’ve always preferred something that doesn’t drown out the sound of approaching cars, dogs, and other obstacles. Luckily, if you’re in the same camp as me, Suunto’s new Sonic headphones are on sale at Amazon and direct from Suunto for $129 ($20 off). You can also pick up the Suunto Wing — which come with a power bank and a few extra features — from Amazon and Suunto for $169 ($30 off). Although they’re pricier than other pairs of open-ear headphones, namely those from Shokz, both the Suunto Sonic and Wing use the same bone conduction tech to send sound vibrations through your cheekbones instead of your ear canal. They aren’t going to rival the...
Lifestyle Possible ad Read on The Verge TechMeta is overhauling its metaverse avatars, and you’ll be able to use them soon: the new look will be available on October 1st, the company announced at its Connect conference on Wednesday. The new avatars will be available on Meta Horizon OS (its VR operating system), as well as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. Meta’s avatars started out in a rough place, but the company has made steady improvements, and these changes look to build on that. With the upgraded avatars, Meta is going to give users new ways to fine-tune things like eye size, nose shape, and body shapes, Meta’s Aigerim Shorman, a VP on the Horizon team, said onstage. That’s thanks in part to a new underlying tech stack, which includes an updated avatar skeleton. Of course,...
